Last week, I attended the inaugural CPD board meeting at the PRCA. Representing Women in PR as one of the official launch partners I felt very proud to be part of something so inclusive.

Why do we need CPD? you may ask. I have been taking every professional development opportunity, whether it is PRCA training, conferences, Gorkana breakfast briefings, PR Moment events, judging awards, since I completed my Diploma. I have benefited hugely from the knowledge, the contacts I have made, and it has kept my job interesting. Especially when it comes to leading integrated campaigns.

The committee is chaired by Women in PR and PR Week Mentoring mentor Alison Clarke. She told the board that CPD raises everyone’s standards, it promotes best practice and improves the reputation of our profession.

I personally think that it not only keeps you on top of trends, women on maternity leave can also use it as a tool to make returning to work easier.

CPD is not just about up-skilling, it can also be used to re-skill. I specialise in traditional media relations but have had to learn pretty quickly about digital strategy, crisis, influencer and social media.

The best thing about this CPD scheme is that it is open to everyone. Every level, from beginner to board director, graduate to group heads. It is never too early, or too late. We have even had our first completer who has logged their year’s points already. You don’t have to be a PRCA member to take part, and you can earn points from attending Women in PR events. Whilst our events do have a ticket price as a not for profit organisation, it is possible to complete the scheme without spending a penny.
